México City: Where Water Gave Birth to the City
México City was originally a lake system where cultures like the Mexica and the Xochimilca flourished. Tenochtitlan, an island city connected by canals and causeways, surrounded by productive chinampas, was built on these waters.
After the conquest, the lakes were drained to prevent flooding, giving way to the urban expansion that formed the city today. However, this lacustrine origin still lives on in places like Xochimilco, where canals and traditional agricultural systems persist.
Today, the city combines history, culture, and nature: from the Historic Center of México City to its ecological spaces, offering a unique experience where the past and present coexist.
The Valley of México is a natural region located in the center of the country, surrounded by mountain ranges and volcanoes that form a closed valley with no natural outlet to the sea. Within it lies México City, built upon what was once a system of interconnected lakes. This valley is part of the Mexican Plateau and is characterized by its altitude, mountainous terrain, and historical importance as one of the main centers of human development in Mesoamerica.
